For many of us who know her, Betsy DeVos is a celebrated business woman, education reformer, and leading advocate for student’s rights. She is married to a family with long conservative business tradition. In the spring of 2013, Betsy held an interview with Philanthropy Roundtable, and spoke about various issues, including the role of government in education and education advocacy. Betsy was first asked about the progress the country had made since Milton Friedman wrote about the role of government in education 50 years ago. In what many described as the first principled call supporting school choice.
Betsy quipped that she was pleased by the progress so far witnessed, because the country today boasts of having 250,000 students in over 30 private and publicly funded choice programs in 17 states and DC. She added that 40,000 new students were enrolled in educational-choice programs in 2012 compared to the previous year. During the interview, Betsy also affirmed that she was a member of the education choice movement in the 1990’s, having served on the board of two national charitable associations, AERC the American Education Reform Council and CFA, Children First America.
These charities are at the forefront of campaigning for the expansion of educational choice through tax credits and vouchers. Asked about her biggest success, Betsy told Philanthropy about the glowing success the Florida tax credit scholarship program has had on student’s lives. Through the program, more than 50,000 students have chosen to attend family preferred schools. Besides Florida, Indiana and Louisiana programs have also recorded tremendous success. Betsy ended the interview envisioning a time when parents from different social economic backgrounds and persuasions will have the opportunity to select the best educational setting for their kids to develop and exploit their full potential.
